Justin Michal is a U.S. Congressional Candidate for Michigan's 1st Congressional District, representing Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. A Small-Town Upbringing with Big Aspirations

Raised in Grayling, Justin understands firsthand what it means to grow up in a small Northern Michigan town where hard work and resilience are woven into daily life. Growing up in a middle-class family with a proud military and patriotic tradition, Justin witnessed the hard work and determination of his parents, friends, and neighbors striving to build better futures and make ends meet. These formative experiences instilled in him a deep respect for perseverance, community, and the belief that small-town values can inspire meaningful change.

Service to Country and Community

Justin's professional journey began with a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, where he honed his leadership skills, discipline, and a commitment to serve the United States of America. His military service included deployments during wartime and international peacekeeping missions, giving him invaluable experience managing conflicts and fostering unity across diverse cultures. These experiences reinforced his belief in the power of collaboration and compassion while facing great adversity to Bridge the Divides between people with differing cultures, ideologies, languages, perspectives, and religions.

A Lifelong Commitment to Those Who Served

After retiring from the military, Justin Michal committed himself to championing the needs of fellow veterans both in the classroom and across the country.

Education & Advocacy

As a charter member of the Student Veterans of America chapter at his college, Justin worked tirelessly to ensure veterans received the benefits and representation they earned. Partnering with veteran and other charitable organizations, his advocacy efforts has helped raise nearly $10 million to support veterans in crisis to date.

While completing his Master of Business Administration (MBA), Justin providing tutoring and academic mentorship to struggling student veterans. He experienced firsthand the barriers veterans face while pursuing higher education and has worked tirelessly to lessen the burden through mentorship, advocacy, and systemic reform.

Research That Drove Change

During his doctoral studies, Justin authored a comprehensive report titled:

“BASIC ALLOWANCE FOR HOUSING/MILITARY HOUSING AREAS: Current Allotment Discrepancies in Certain Locations Reflecting Unusually Dynamic Fluctuations in the Housing Market.”

His research uncovered disparities in housing allowances for student veterans. Justin presented the findings directly to:

The result? Housing allowances for veteran students increased in 28 areas across the United States.

Recognized by the VA

Justin received the Department of Veterans Affairs Commendation Award in 2023 for his unwavering support of veterans transitioning from military to civilian life.

Academic Excellence and Global Impact

Justin holds an MBA from Florida Atlantic University with organizational leadership, strategic planning, and economic development expertise. He is completing his dissertation to earn a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University. His research on armed and unarmed conflict has influenced decisions by international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the United Nations (U.N.) Special Representatives in Geneva, Switzerland. His work at the U.N., particularly on Human Rights and Restorative Justice, exemplifies his ability to navigate complex global issues with empathy and purpose.

Justin applied his expertise in conflict resolution to help individuals and organizations overcome challenges, mediate disputes, negotiate settlements, and build stronger relationships. His work as a conflict resolution professional equips him with a unique perspective on transparency, inclusivity, and accountability—qualities sorely needed in Washington.
